4 Ways 3D Printing Will Revolutionize Architecture Models

3D printing is a technology that’s set to revolutionize everything from education to the medical field. Recently, 3D printing made headlines after Dubai announced the completion of its first 3D printed office building.

The building phase is not the only part that can benefit from 3D printing. It affects the entire design phase from top to bottom. Here, we will discuss some ways that 3D printing will improve architecture models.

Better Physical Models:

Before getting into construction, architects need to create what’s known as a prototype. This is a 3D model of the end product based on the architect’s design. Currently, most prototypes are painstakingly designed by a sculptor who works off the plans provided by the architect.

Not only is this way time-consuming, but it is also expensive. 3D printing looks to change all that. Through this method, a 3D printer can get to work manufacturing a model in a fraction of the time it takes a human to do so.

Modeled to Perfection:

Even the best make mistakes. With a human sculptor, a perfect design doesn’t always result in an ideal model. Human error has to be taken into consideration when designing architectural prototypes. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. With 3D printing, an architect’s design can be translated into a 3D model with absolutely no deviations or mistakes.

You’re in Control:

One of the many downsides to traditional model creation is that if a client doesn’t like the model, or requests a change, the entire time-intensive process starts again. In a 3D printing system, if a client requires a change and a new model, you simply change the design as per their request and have it re-printed.

Better Communication:

Because 3D printing is cheaper and can be done at a quicker pace than traditional modeling, architects can have a model printed for each step of the design process. The advantage of this is two-part.

  1. The client has a better understanding of the project at each stage.
  2. Any feedback can be addressed before moving on to the next stage.

Both of these mean that the use of 3D printed models will help increase efficiency in the design process, and improve communication between the client and the architect.

Conclusion:

Reduced costs, more accuracy and better communication with clients are all things that 3D printed models bring to the table. It’s a technology that is set to change the way that models are designed and used.
